How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other website possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to here the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the audi replacement key uk connector's edge facing upwards). 4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire spare audi key cost when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good news is they are quite affordable and readily available, especially when you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what ours are. 5. Tachometer

It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
